Few people can captivate an audience in person, much less online, the way [lastfm]Ray LaMontagne[/lastfm] captured the hearts and souls of thousands of viewers around the world for his streaming Live on Letterman concert tonight.
In case you missed it, we’ve got the encore, streaming replay, on-demand info, and setlist for you right here.
Ray LaMontagne may have entered the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater discreetly and in a nondescript manner, but the 45 minute performance that followed was anything but. LaMontagne had the crowd moving and shuffling along as he and the Pariah Dogs rocked “Repo Man,” even throwing in an unlikely riff on James Brown’s “Good Foot.”
From there Ray slowed it down with the absolutely heartbreaking “New York City is Killing Me,” which seemed to echo even more painfully, as the pedal steel wept melancholically through the Midtown Manhattan studio. LaMontagne’s velvet voice continued to cry out with unrivaled and riveting sincerity on the haunting “God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise.”
“Beg, Steal or Borrow” rang out like a soulful plea from a desperate man and had the crowd hanging on ever note. Slipping into sparse, acoustic arrangements, LaMontagne had the crowd rapt in the subtle details flowing from every pluck and slide on the neck of his guitar and each lyric he emoted.
Few artists can take a reflective and brooding look at life as Ray does in “Old Before Your Time,” and make a crowd smile and bob their heads along. LaMontagne’s gift shined brightly and managed to fill the room with job while delivering what could be an otherwise morose message.
It seemed LaMontagne and company were ready to put the show to bed with an amazingly soulful rendition of “Rock & Roll and Radio.” Ray introduced his band and exited the stage, despite the pleas for more. But the rock gods heard our prayers, and LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs returned for a rollicking encore with “Henry Nearly Killed Me.”
As the show grew into an intense crescendo of beautiful and melodic poetry, the online crowd came pouring in and started doubling in numbers time and time again as more and more fans tweeted their love for Ray and his music. Here are some of our favorite tweets from the night:
