Album Review: Snoop Dogg’s “Doggumentary” Takes You Back

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm] is easily one of the most versatile hip hop artists of the 21st Century.

His ability to collaborate with just about any artist from any genre has given him a platform to diversify his sound and his audience in a way that has made him the superstar he is today.

And Doggumentary his 11th studio album is no exception.  Snoop Dogg delivers old school ’90s hip hop with a fresh and updated sound that works for today’s audience while remaining true to a genre he had a hand in cultivating.  Check out our review and come back tomorrow to watch Snoop Dogg’s Live on Letterman exclusive concert (5pm PT/8pm ET) right here!

Doggumentary is your typical Snoop Dogg album, chock full of collaborations with some of the biggest names in music including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]T-Pain[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]R. Kelly[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Legend[/lastfm] and the original toker, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Willie Nelson[/lastfm], just to name a few.

As expected, Snoop Dogg holds his own on the tracks where he’s rapping, but he really shines in the unconventional collaborations that he manages to pull off.  J

ust like in “California Gurls” his track with Katy Perry, Snoop manages to know what people want in terms of thinking outside of the box and a perfect example of this is his track with Willie Nelson.

Perhaps, “Boom” is a better example of Snoop doing what he does best, working with auto-tune master T-Pain on a track that samples 1980s hit “Situation” by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Yazoo[/lastfm].  You’ll be hearing this track in clubs and likely all over radio, it’s catchy, it’s fun and most of all it has that throwback sound from a perfectly selected sample.
